Obituary: Lloyd Herritage Harrison

HARRISON TOBACCOVILLE - Lloyd Herritage Harrison, M.D., of Tobaccoville, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, at the age of 72.

He was born Oct. 18, 1935, to Lloyd Hyman and Mary Virginia Harrison in Tarboro. Lloyd graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington; Wake Forest College; and Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during his internship at Tripler General Hospital and later as a captain with the 65th Engineer Battalion 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii.

After serving in the U.S. Army, he was a general practitioner for two years in Warrenton. He completed his residency in urology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University and N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was a professor on the staff of Bowman Gray School of Medicine where he taught and practiced for 30 years as a urologist. He was a respected surgeon, lecturer and author of peer-reviewed clinical papers, textbook chapters and journal articles. He was also a member of the American Medical Association and the American Urological Association. He presided as president of The American Urological Association from 1999-2000.

Lloyd' s hobbies included reading and showing champion Irish Setters, one of which won Best of Breed at Westminister Kennel Club Dog Show.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Karren; a son, Lloyd Herritage Harrison Jr. of Charlotte, six daughters, Mary Beth Harrison Rhoades (David) of Raleigh; Kathy Harrison McMillan (Joel) of Rincon, Ga.; Jane Harrison Schnably (Mark) of Winston-Salem; Janet Foster Weiss of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; Debbie Foster Owens (Duane) of Reno, Nev.; and Cheryl Foster of Orlando, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, Sarah Ann and Harrison Rhoades of Raleigh; Caroline and Riley McMillan of Rincon; Rich Schnably of Winston-Salem; Jennifer Weiss of Bridgeport, Conn.; Ashley Weiss of Rancho Cucamonga; and Megan Owens Plateman (Josh), Brett, Cameron and Chase Owens of Reno, Nev.; a great-grandson, Makai Yates of Bridgeport; a sister, Henrietta Rowe of Ayden; and a brother, Albert Harrison of Charlotte.

The family expresses its deep gratitude to the physicians, nurses and caregivers who cared for Lloyd at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
